Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) was written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge and serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2016 to 2020. The story follows Tanjiro Kamado, a charcoal seller whose family is slaughtered by Muzan Kibutsuji, the original demon. His sister Nezuko survives but is turned into a demon herself. Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps to find a cure and destroy Muzan.
The manga sold over 150 million copies worldwide, but it was the anime adaptation by studio Ufotable in 2019 that turned Demon Slayer into a global phenomenon. Episode 19 of Season 1, the Tanjiro vs Rui fight, went viral and is credited with single-handedly boosting the manga's sales. The Mugen Train film (2020) became the highest-grossing film in Japanese box office history, surpassing Spirited Away, with over 400 million dollars worldwide.
