Dragon Ball: the legacy that shaped an entire genre

Created by Akira Toriyama and serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1984 to 1995, Dragon Ball Z is the series that taught a generation what a shonen fight scene could look like. For millions of Western fans, it was Cartoon Network and Toonami that delivered it straight into living rooms in the late 90s and early 2000s. Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, Majin Buu. The saga built the template every shonen since has followed.

The Kamehameha, the Spirit Bomb, Super Saiyan transformations, Instant Transmission, the Potara fusion creating Vegito. These are not just techniques. They are cultural touchstones. With over 260 million manga copies sold, Toriyama's work remains one of the defining achievements in the medium.
